  9. <p>The 170th FS is the group's operational unit and has flown the F-16A since October 1989. The unit was established as the 170th Fighter Squadron in September 1948 with F-51Ds and ordered to active service in March 1951. The 170th was redesignated a Fighter-Bomber Squadron in April 1951 and returned to state control in November 1952. The squadron converted to F-86Es in late 1953 and F-84Fs at the end of 1954. Designation changed to 170th FIS in July 1955, and 170th TFS in November 1958. The unit was mobilized from October 1961 until August 1962, with the 183rd TFG assigned in October 1962. The F-4C was operated from January 1972 and the F-4D from July 1984, until the F-16A arrived.
